Install YakYak – Google Hangouts Desktop Chat Client on Ubuntu 22.04

YakYak is the desktop client for Google Hangouts, and for the readers unfamiliar with Google Hangouts, Google Hangouts is the application developed by Google and Gmail to communicate with other people via text messaging, calls, file sharing and screen sharing. YakYak is open source, but to make calls you need to buy a subscription.

Google Hangouts can be installed on various operating systems including Android, iOS and Linux operating systems and in this guide we will explore YakYak on Ubuntu installation methods to use Google Hangouts.

How to Install YakYak on Ubuntu 22.04

There are two methods to install YakYak on Ubuntu, either by downloading the Debian package or by downloading it from Snapcraft store. We will explain both methods in detail in the next section.

Method 1: How to download YakYak on Ubuntu 22.04 from its Debian package

We can download its Debian package using the wget command with the following command:

$ wget -c https://github.com/jakyak/jakyak/releases/Download/v1.5.9/yakyak-1.5.9-linux-amd64.deb

For the installation of YakYak we use the dpkg Command:

$ sudo dpkg -I yakyak-1.5.9-linux-amd64.deb

To uninstall YakYak’s package from Ubuntu, run the following command:

$ sudo apt purge yakyak -y

Method 2: How to install YakYak on Ubuntu from Snapcraft

Snapcraft is a store that contains the snaps of various Linux applications. We can download the Snaps of various Linux applications from Snapcraft and install them using the Snap utility. Likewise, we will download and install the YakYak from its snap with the following command:

$ sudo grab To install jakyak

To start the application we go to the Ubuntu search bar and type “yakyak” and click on the application icon:

The application has started and now if we want to remove the application use the command:

$ sudo Snap remove Yakyak

To use the Google Hangout to send and receive messages on Ubuntu, we can simply install the YakYak package on Ubuntu. In this guide two different methods of installing YakYak have been explained in detail, either from the Snapcraft store or from its Debian package.
